While open worlds are neat to look at, I find them to be a really big roadblock to interesting environments, since you essentially have to take a few well designed levels and stretch them over several square miles of terrain.
PotN would have a more traditional “instance” system, with each “county” being its own separate map, allowing for more control and villages that exceed populations you can count on your fingers.
